A student house by the harbour at night, cut open so you can see into four rooms where students sit with their phones. A thread runs from each phone to the ember emblem in the stairwell. Beside it, the same house with the lights off: golden threads link two pairs of neighbours straight through the wall.

Someone at BTH wants to get to know you.

Finding your people outside your studies shouldn’t be difficult.

The inside counts.

We’re creating a place where you can feel safe being exactly who you are.

Everyone does better with someone close, someone who really cares. Finding that person, or those people, is a huge challenge in today’s society. That’s why we’re building ember.

We’re the opposite of social media. No profiles, no polished pictures, no bios, no friend requests and no DMs. The only way to talk to someone is for ember to connect you. And when ember does, it’s because you already fit each other on several levels.

How it works.

  1. Write with ember. A short period of time every day, as a natural break from doomscrolling.

  2. Let ember get to know you. What you tell ember is never shared with anyone else.

  3. Get to know someone new. ember starts a new chat with a student you really should be talking to.

  4. You and everyone else on ember are anonymous. That means you decide exactly what you share about yourself.

Safety and trust are at the heart of ember.

  • No public profiles.

You never have to share your name, your face or any other personal details. You decide what you share, and when.

  • Take care of each other.

Deep down, we’re all here for the same reason: we’re looking for someone, or a few people, who can fill a gap. That’s why it matters so much that we care about each other.

  • Respect is required.

Bad behaviour is taken very seriously. Anyone who behaves badly is banned and isn’t welcome back.

  • Your data is yours.

We never sell it. It’s only used so that ember can get to know you and find someone who fits you.

Help shape how we build meaningful relationships in the future.

We’re starting small, with a few students at BTH, and we want to build ember together with you.

What you get

  • Time to think about who you are and what kind of relationship you’re missing today
  • A chance to get to know more people deeply
  • A real say in what ember becomes

What we ask

  • A little while with ember every day
  • Be yourself. Be honest. Be kind.
  • Your feedback when the pilot ends (after about a week)

It’s free and doesn’t commit you to anything.
